Indoor Environments & Green Buildings

Policy Resource Center

Buildings account for a large share of our energy and water use, CO2 emissions, and solid waste. The built environment also has a significant impact on health and productivity. Children and adults in the U.S. spend up to 90% of their time indoors, where levels of pollutants may be many times higher than outdoors—pollutants such as radon, mold, lead, combustion products, chemicals emitted by consumer products or building materials, and contaminants drawn into buildings from outside. As we work to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change by making buildings more efficient and resilient, attention to indoor environmental quality becomes especially important.

ELI’s Indoor Environments & Green Buildings Program provides information to support the development and implementation of sound policies to address key health and environmental issues in design, construction, operation, and maintenance of schools, homes, and other buildings.
