Everyone knows the basic facts. On April 20, 2010, Transocean’s Deepwater Horizon drilling platform, operating under lease to British Petroleum about 40 miles off the southeastern tip of Louisiana, experienced a “blowout.” Investigators are still working out the details of what happened next, but the ensuing explosion resulted in an open pipeline that is discharging tens of thousands of barrels of oil per day.
