Summary

The lower 48 states have suffered tremendous wetlands losses and degradation principally due to agriculture, transportation, industrial activities, and urbanization. Overall, the average loss of wetlands in the contiguous United States is 53 percent. In contrast, Alaska has lost less than 0.15 percent of its wetlands and perhaps as little as 0.03 percent depending on which loss estimates are used.
