Summary

On June 1, 1984, the Maryland Governor Harry Hughes signed into law the Chesapeake Bay Critical Areas Commission Act, the cornerstone of his legislative package aimed at cleaning up the Chesapeake Bay. This law, one of the state’s most controversial and far reaching land use initiatives, established a state policy of resource protection for the Bay and its shoreline areas.
