Summary

Bordering the Chesapeake Bay, composed almost entirely of private lands, traversed by rivers and covered in wetlands, the Eastern Shore of Maryland presents a complex conservation challenge for wetlands protection. To further complicate the situation, agriculture—an activity largely exempt from regulation under §404 of the Clean Water Act—is the largest industry in the area.
