Summary
In 1987, the New Jersey Legislature, under pressure from a gubernatorial moratorium that stopped all development in wetlands, passed comprehensive freshwater wetland protection legislation. Today, New Jersey's Freshwater Wetlands Protection Act is still considered by many wetland experts to be the strongest wetland protection legislation in the nation.
