Winter has arrived, and for most of us, the first snowfall brings with it the beginning of another season—at least three months, usually more, of salt-covered roads and sidewalks. Our use of road salt is practically automatic; it is as much a part of winter culture as mittens and hot chocolate. But what are the ecological consequences of our salt dependence?
