INSTRUCTIONS FOR SEARCHING

• Jurisdiction/State: Enter key words/terms for the specific governmental entity or entities desired: the names of Tribal nations, states, state agencies, localities, the United States, and/or federal agencies. Using a state as a search term will also produce Tribal policies for Tribes who are located within that state’s borders. It does not imply state jurisdiction over Tribal nations.
• Date: Enter the year or year range to find documents within a date range. You must include both an earliest date and a latest date. If you want to filter by a single year, use the same value for earliest and latest dates.
• Subject of Consultation: You may limit your search by selecting one or more type of legal document from the drop-down menu. If you select only one, your results will include only documents that match that selection; if you select multiple types, the results will include documents that address any of the selected. Please note that the following categories include additional terms: “Historic properties or traditional/Tribal cultural places/sites” includes historic properties, traditional cultural places, Tribal cultural sites, and traditional Tribal cultural places; “Cultural/sacred/funerary items/objects” includes cultural items, funerary objects, sacred objects, and objects of cultural patrimony; and “Natural resources/species” includes Tribal trust resources, natural resources, species, and environment.
• Type of Legal Document: You may limit your search by selecting one or more type of legal document from the drop-down menu. If you select only one, your results will include only documents that match that selection; if you select multiple types, the results will include documents that address any of the selected.
• Level of Government: You may limit your search by selecting one or more level of government from the drop-down menu. If you select only one, your results will include only documents that match that selection; if you select multiple, the results will include documents that address any of the selected.
• Keyword: Use keywords to search the abstracts of resources included in the database. Entering multiple words will yield abstracts with any of those words; to search for a specific phrase, use quotation marks around the phrase.
